SEL Student Screeners

Dear PS 12 Families,

The NYCDOE will be implementing a strengths-based, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) screener in the 2021-2022 school year. The implementation of this SEL screener will begin on Monday, November 8th, 2021. According to the NYCDOE, the DESSA is a strength-based screener, which highlights a student's positive social and emotional strengths and builds from there. For more information, please visit: NYCDOE+ Aperture Education

As per the NYCDOE, if you do not want a staff member to complete the DESSA screener for your student, you must write a letter to Principal Watson stating that. You may send this letter to Principal Watson at or send in a written letter addressed to Principal Watson. This letter needs to be received by the school by Friday, November 5th, 2021.

The Family Facing DESSA Letter will be sent home to all students today, November 3rd, 2021. The Family Facing DESSA Letter is also attached to this email for your review.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Homnick ( or Ms. Naidu (
